VARIETY – Amy Adams is in talks to star in the upcoming Annapurna Pictures drama “The True American,” sources tell Variety.

Sources tell Variety that Annapurna is still a producer, but will no longer finance the movie. It’s in talks with Amazon Studios to take over financing and distribution.

Insiders close to the situation say a deal has not yet closed and scheduling is still being worked out, specifically regarding her promotion efforts on her upcoming HBO limited series “Sharp Objects,” but that Adams wants this as her next film project. Adams is also a producer on “Sharp Objects” and considers the project a high priority, making her promotion on the HBO project a bigger commitment than a usual tour.

Annapurna could not be reached for comment.

“Jackie” helmer Pablo Larrain is on board to direct, and Mark Ruffalo and Kumail Nanjiani are also in talks to co-star with Adams.

With production on “Sharp Objects” and the upcoming Dick Cheney pic “Backseat” coming to a close, Adams had been weighing several projects, but it had always seemed like “The True American” was the frontrunner to be her next commitment.

Based on the nonfiction book by Anand Giridharadas, “The True American” is set in Texas in the days following the 9/11 attacks. It follows Rais Bhuiyan, a Muslim immigrant and Bangladesh Air Force veteran who narrowly survived a killing spree that took the lives of two other immigrants. Employed at a Dallas-area convenience store as he established himself in America, Bhuiyan worked to have his attacker, self-proclaimed “Arab slayer” Mark Stroman, spared from execution.

Annapurna has been developing the film for some time, and at one point, Kathryn Bigelow was on board to direct and Tom Hardy was attached to star. After Bigelow left to direct “Detroit,” the project was in flux until Larrain’s attachment last April.

Annapurna topper Megan Ellison, Bigelow, Matthew Budman, and Juan de Dios Larrain will produce.

Following a busy 2016 that included the Oscar-nominated “Arrival” and “Nocturnal Animals,” Adams took a bit of a break in 2017, only appearing as Lois Lane in “Justice League.” 2018 looks to be busier, including “Sharp Objects,” which premieres this year, as well as “Backseat,” where she will portray Cheney’s wife, Lynn. That movie also stars Christian Bale and is already expected to drum up awards attention.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the Amazon news.

Amy Adams is featured in the GARAGE Magazine as Andy Warhol in Drag. She was photographed by Photographed by Inez & Vinoodh and styled by Mel Ottenberg. Read the article on our press archive and see the photoshoot and the videos below:

There is a pivotal scene in American Hustle in which Irving, a toupee-wearing con artist, confesses to his mistress Sydney that his loan business is a scam—and then proposes she join him in the illegal scheme. Disgusted by his invitation, Sydney walks immediately out of his office and slams the door, its frosted glass window rattling in the frame. And then, to Irving’s utter confusion, Sydney struts back into the room, looking the same but somehow fundamentally changed, and, using a pitiably false British accent, reintroduces herself as his new partner in crime: “Would you like to meet Lady Edith Greensly?” She offers her hand, demanding he kiss it. “I have royal banking connections in London. I’d love to help you with your loan, but of course I have to be vah-ry se-lec-teeve.” And just like that, one character has morphed into another. Irving is played to drab perfection by Christian Bale, but it’s Amy Adams’s performance as Sydney—and Sydney’s performance as Lady Edith—that leaves us dazzled. (Read more)

Here’s the most outstandingly cute anecdote from the Golden Globes.

File this under: Mom, exactly what is it that you do?

On Sunday night, Amy Adams had to tell her 7 year old daughter, Aviana, the facts of life: Mom is a movie star.

I ran into Adams on Monday night in West Hollywood at Craig’s having a quiet dinner with actor-director Darren LeGallo and producer Chuck Roven and his wife, Stephanie.

Did you watch the Golden Globes, I asked them?

Amy and Darren then told this story. “Aviana saw the people getting the awards and she said, Mom, do you have one?”

Amy replied: “Well, as a matter of fact, I do. I have two.” Amy won back to back Globes in 2014 and 2015 for “Big Eyes” and “American Hustle.”

Aviana asked: Where are they? “They’re up on a shelf,” Amy told her and took them down.

How did the little girl react? I wish I could show you the pictures, but the rights belong to Aviana– of the little girl having dinner on her TV table, big grin, with a Golden Globe on either side of her plate. It’s a sight to behold! Wait til Aviana finds out her mom also has 5 Oscar nominations!

Adam Shankman was on a Television Critics Association panel for Step Up: High Water, the YouTube Red series he is producing based on the Step Up films. After the panel, he spoke with /Film about the sequel to Enchanted. Shankman is set to direct the film, which is titled Disenchanted.

“We are handing in a script in a couple weeks that I’m super happy with,” Shankman said. “Then gotta get the music written.”

Disenchanted has been in development since 2010. Amy Adams will reprise her role as Gisele, the animated Disney princess who decided to stay in live-action New York at the end of Enchanted. The sequel is set 10 years after 2007’s Enchanted. As the title suggests, Giselle may be rethinking her love of the real world. That is still the premise of the new script, Shankman said.

“The fundamental story has changed a little bit, but not from the base story of it,” Shankman said. “It’s about Giselle 10 years later going, ‘What is happily ever after?’”

In classic Disney fashion, Enchanted had five musical numbers, three of which were nominated for Oscars (“Falling Slowly” from Once won that year). Shankman said there would be more songs in the sequel.

“There’s a lot more songs this time than there were in the original, at least in the planning phase right now,” Shankman said.

Enchanted was bookended with animated sequences. Shankman said fans can expect the same amount of animation in the sequel.

“As for the animation, it’s probably about the same amount,” he said.

Disenchanted could conceivably still make a 2018 release if the new script is greenlit immediately. For now, consider it TBD.
